Office of Inspector General Modernizes Case File Sharing with DOJ & Law Enforcement

Challenge

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) of a large US government agency relied on BlackBerry Workspaces (formerly WatchDox) to share evidence and case files with the Department of Justice, local law enforcement, and other investigation stakeholders, but ease of use and reliability issues prompted a search for a new solution. OIG wanted to share files stored in OneDrive and SharePoint Online without copying them elsewhere, needed org-defined and AD-mapped sharing policies, and had to ensure the new platform wouldn't be blocked by DOJ and other highly secure organizations that routinely block links from WatchDox, Box, Dropbox, and Google Drive.

Solution

OIG selected eSHARE for capabilities WatchDox and other point solutions couldn't match: native integration with OneDrive and SharePoint (with eSHARE storing no files of its own), support for OpenID so recipients could authenticate with credentials they already had, large-file support beyond OneDrive and SharePoint's 100GB cap, and fine-grained, dynamically watermarked file access — including the ability to delegate access to a colleague. All file links used a subdomain of OIG (e.g., files.oig.gov) to avoid the link-blocking common with generic sharing domains.

Results

• OIG completed its migration to eSHARE in six weeks, including planning, setup, and change management for roughly 800 users
• Case files now move to DOJ and law enforcement partners without the link-blocking that had disrupted the previous WatchDox-based workflow
• OIG gained fine-grained, AD-mapped sharing policies and large-file support that its previous platform, plus OneDrive and SharePoint alone, could not provide
